The early strides of award season were taken Monday night at the annual Gotham Awards which honors and recognizes independent pictures.
Finishing the night with the most wins was, “Marriage Story,” including victories in Best Feature and Screenplay. “The Farewell,” also had a good showing, taking home Best Actress.
Director Ava DuVernay, Actor Sam Rockwell, Actress Laura Dern, Industry Professional Glen Basner and New York film honoree Jason DaSilva were also given special tributes during the ceremony.

At the box office this weekend, it was the animated sequel “Frozen II” dominating the days after Thanksgiving. The movie made $82.2 million, easily ahead of the newcomer “Knives Out,” with $27 million.
The full top five was:
1. Frozen II – $82,250,000
2. Knives Out – $27,022,000
3. Ford v Ferrari – $13,221,000
4. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood – $11,800,000
5. Queen and Slim – $11,700,000
For the upcoming weekend, the only major release is “The Aeronauts.”
