Monday Movie Report: How high can Endgame soar at box office?

“Avengers: Endgame” isn’t just hitting theaters this weekend, it’s smashing them like the Hulk.

Regardless of exact predictions, several entertainment news agencies are seeing opening weekend estimates coming in over $250 million.

Box Office Pro, for example, is estimating a 3-day weekend release of between $270 million and $300 million. Deadline Hollywood, meanwhile, is expecting the film to hit between $260 million and $270 million.

Forbes has also come with a prediction, with an expectation of $279 million.

Any of those predictions would come in above “Avengers: Infinity War,” which earned $257.6 million and set the record for highest opening weekend.

“Infinity War” also holds the international opening weekend record, with more than $640 million in its first outing. According to Forbes, “Endgame” could surpass this, too, with the potential of more than $830 million globally.

Additionally, Forbes is reporting the potential for “Endgame” to break individual day records for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, along with early Thursday screenings.
So far, Deadline has reported that advanced ticket sales for “Endgame” are over $120 million and could be as high as $140 million.

As for the most recent box office numbers, last weekend was obviously the calm before the storm. The highest earner was the horror “Curse of La Llorona” with $26.5 million, followed by “Shazam!,” which is hanging tough with a No. 2 finish of $17.3 million.

The full top five was:

1. The Curse of La Llorona – $26,505,000
2. Shazam! – $17,340,000
3. Breakthrouth – $11,100,000
4. Captain Marvel – $9,100,000
5. Little – $8,451,000

As for the small screen, new releases this week on home video include:

  • Escape Room, my rating: 2 out of 5, Large Association of Movie Blogs rating: 2.67 out of 5, Rotten Tomatoes rating: 48%.
  • Destroyer, Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 74%.
